Medical Missions
CHANGING
LIVES IN
SOUTH
AMERICA
Dr. Wilton leads a medical team of American surgeons, nurses, and volunteers that specializes in upper and lower extremity peripheral nerve surgery for the treatment of leprosy-related limb paralysis, pain, and muscle weakness. The team has operated on over 500+ upper and lower extremities to restore sensation, reduce and eliminate pain, and restore function to hands and feet. Since they started these medical missions in 2004, their surgical patient age ranges from 18 to 86. These gracious, wonderful people are afflicted with Leprosy (Hansen's disease) and fight the public stigma of this disease every day. This is a bacterial mediated disease that can be medically cured with antibiotics. Dr. Wilton's team treats secondary peripheral nerve problems that arise after the antibiotic treatment ends. This leads to paralysis, pain and loss of arm and leg/foot function. He has also operated on children and infants with foot and ankle deformities in South America with Project Perfect World Pediatric Foundation. The team now works in coordination with the Damien Foundation in Guayaquil Ecuador and Sister Annie Credidio, the Foundation Director.
DAMIAN HOUSE
Dr. Wilton and his team are honored to work with the Damian House in Guayaquil, Ecuador, a residential hospital that treats 30 leprosy patients in house and over 700 outpatients. With the help of donations to the US-based Damien House organization, the staff is also able to provide patients with dental care, physical and occupational therapy, sanitary services, medication, and three well-balanced hot meals every day.
